How do you know if that business idea you’ve been mulling over would actually work? Sophie
Edington, founder of thedinnerset.com, shares her quick guide from her Hub Dot talk to test if
your idea could become a successful reality.
Ready, set…
First ask yourself: What problem does my idea solve?
The greater the problem and the more wholly your solution solves it the greater your success.
The more unique your solution the better too. e.g. WD40 totally solves the problem of
rust…but anyone can make it.
Pitch your idea to friends
They’ll say it’s amazing, but the more you say it out loud, the more you’ll shape your idea and
the language you use to talk about it.
But listen to strangers
These are the only people who will give you honest feedback. Survey Monkey is a free survey
tool you can utilise, and you can try asking for feedback on Facebook (I did this with a prize
draw incentive).
Find people to work with
Very few people make it alone, and finding people who believe in the idea is testament to its
strength.
Do your homework
It is vital to understand your market before you can decide whether to take the plunge. Places
like City Business Library which is a free resource for anyone looking for market data and
stats.
