For as long as humans have been organised into social groups, we’ve been trying to figure out what it actually means to be human and to be fulfilled. Back in mediaeval times, alchemists were the philosophers, who made it their life’s work to try to create something of great value from something that started out with little value – searching for fulfilment trying to transform common metals into precious gold. Something magical indeed…  Now, you only need to listen to a few of the songs, peppered with angst, that play on repeat across radio stations to realise that fundamentally, we’re all looking for that little spark of magic – that one connection to help us transform the ordinary into the extraordinary.

This is why we describe the essence of Hub Dot as alchemy – finding the extraordinary in the ordinary, away from labels, judgment, or restriction. Here’s Simona Barbieri, who started Hub Dot, to explain: “Being categorised and labelled by others is something we’ve all experienced in our lives. Somehow, it’s the way we’ve been told we need to navigate the world and network with each other. But beyond the label lies a much bigger story. Sometimes the artist in you is looking to share a business idea, sometimes the business woman in you is looking to reinvent herself.”

Engaging all these different aspects of ourselves, personal or professional, big or small, sharing stories about life, work, challenges, or aspirations, to make a connection with someone who will help us move on to that next chapter still waiting to be written, is what we call Alchemy. The magic ingredients we use to help women connect and find that missing link are one minute stories, which come directly from real people in our community, and our system of coloured Dots. Five Dots to represent a woman’s mind set at a specific moment in time: established, wanting to share an idea, looking for inspiration, wanting to talk about a passion project, or simply wanting to socialise. We discovered that when we bring women together, stripped of labels, and put story-telling at the centre of the way they communicate with each other, incredible things happen.

So whether you’re a writer looking for a book publisher or somewhere to share your blog posts; a singer-songwriter in need of studio space and a mentor in the industry; an established woman wanting to give back; a start-up looking for investment, support, a sympathetic ear; about to move country and looking for some advice, or simply want to connect with like-minded women, we’re inviting you to come with us as we look forward to celebrating four years of creating Alchemy together.
